    A side by side is a four wheeled all terrain vehicle. It usually fits two people and is a more comfortable ride than a normal four wheeler. A side by side usually has a box in the back to put stuff in so they work great if you need to get a job done. Some come with the option of a dump box, this make it easier to haul dirt or anything like that. Its takes more to make these street legal than a regular four-wheeler because you need to add a windshield and doors. They are called side-by-sides because the seats are next to each other. they can go into any type of terrain that a four wheeler or quad can. Some people say the side by side is the best type of ATV because its much safer because of the roof and the fact that you can take another person along and still be safe.

they're many different engine sizes that you can buy. ATV engines sizes are measured be CCs, or Cubic Centimeters of displacement, or how much air/fuel is moved through the engine in one complete revolution of the crankshaft.The different types of ATVs range in size from as small as 50cc youth ATVs up to 700cc Sport quads, 800cc Utility ATVs, and SxS' (side by side) going over 1,000cc. you have to choose which size you want according to your age and weight. If your too young and light for a larger ATV you wont be able to control it. that's why you never see a 5 year old on a 400 cc quad, it just wouldn't work and they would lose control. so next time you buy an ATV ask an employee which size would be the most appropriate for you.

If your into racing but want to stay in state there are a few local and in state tracks to race. The Jack Pine Gypsies track is in Sturgis, the Dumke Motor Sports DMX Raceway in Clear Lake, the Sioux Valley Cycle Club in renner SD, or the Scramblers Cycle Club in yankton. All of these tracks have emails and phone numbers if you are interested and want to go see them yourself and compete. if you go to the closest track in sturgis, the Jack Pine Gypsies, they have cash prizes for winning from 200 to 7000 dollars. they have classes for how experienced riders you race with, and also classes for ATVs, street bikes, dirt bikes, and many others. if you are looking for quality tracks in south Dakota these tracks and clubs would be great places to check out.

riding gear

when riding an atv its best to use the right gear to prevent injuries. mostly all you need gear for is if you are racing. not so much for just range riding. first of all a helmet is a must if you dont want cracks or bumps in your head. besides a helmet you should use a chest plate to protect your ribs and chest, racing boots to protect your ankles, goggles to protect your eyes from dust and rocks, and gloves. if you wear all of this equipment then your risk of injury is reduced by alot. even if you are just drivin your atv it is still a good idea to wear a helment incase you roll your atv over on top of you.

sport and utility atvs

During the summer taking a four-wheeler out on the tracks and trails can be fun. But atvs aren’t only used for play; you can also use them as work horses. There are two types of atvs, sport and utility. There’s only two types but there very many different types of brand names and makers.


The main use of a sport atvs, or quad, is for speed and fun. If you ever want to start racing atvs a quad is what to look for. They have more suspension and a wider wheel base so you don’t hurt yourself going over jumps and around fast corners. They are smaller than a utility because there main use is speed. Because you would be going around turns and over jumps you’ll have to adjust your speed a lot. That’s why sport atvs have more aggressive gears than a utility atvs.

If you’re looking for an atvs for more of a work use you’re looking for a utility atvs. They have a lot more power that would leave a sport atvs in the dust. They are bigger and heavier than a sport and have lower gears for more power. You can get a utility atvs with 4 wheel drive and differential lock for better traction. For really bad conditions you can attach a winch to the front of a utility to pull you or other atvs out.
